When the Company Logo Comes Off

One of my recent clients had built a long and accomplished career across both the public and private sectors before deciding to start her own consultancy.

For most of her career, her work spoke for itself. Her experience and reputation had been built over many years, but always within well-established organisations. The logo did a lot of the introducing for her. Now she was building something of her own, and the logo wasn't coming with her. Her website would introduce her. So would her LinkedIn profile, proposals and speaking engagements. Everything would start with the same thing.

Her.

This is one of the reasons people come to me. It isn't that they've suddenly developed an interest in professional photography. It's that, when you're building your own business, your portrait becomes part of how people decide whether to trust you. It doesn't replace years of experience. It simply gives that experience a face.

The logo may have come off. Everything she'd spent years building came with her.

Over the past year, I've noticed more people coming to me at this exact stage of their careers. They aren't starting from scratch. They're taking everything they've spent years building and putting their own name to it. I never expected portrait photography to introduce me to so many people willing to leave certainty behind and build something of their own.
