I Look Like My Father
During a recent viewing session, a client was moving through his portraits fairly quickly at first, then paused at one set. He looked at it for a moment and said, "I look like my father."
It gave me goosebumps.
It could have been a passing remark. But from the way he held that moment, it felt like something more. I don't think he meant a simple physical resemblance. It felt like recognition. Like he was seeing himself step into something new yet familiar. A different role. A different stage of life. Maybe even a part of himself he hadn't fully seen before.
I've had clients react to their wrinkles, their smile, their posture. But this was the first time I watched someone sit with a photograph and find something that went beyond how they looked.
The image didn't create that moment. It just gave him a chance to see it.
